Are you suffering with unexplained symptoms? Have the doctors lumped you into the IBS category or stuck you on Prilosec?
Let’s have a little chat about Low Stomach Acid….
I’m not going to give you a percentage here, because honestly I’ve seen a lot of varying claims on the amount of people who have low stomach acid, but let’s just think about the symptoms of acid reflux and the prescriptions they use to lower peoples stomach acid because of it. Compare those with the following symptoms of low stomach acid.
Symptoms of Low Stomach Acid
- Bloating, belching, and flatulence immediately after meals
- Heartburn (often thought to be caused by too much stomach acid)
- Indigestion, diarrhea, or constipation
- Undigested food in stools
- Rectal itching
- Chronic Candida
- Hair loss in women
- Multiple food allergies
- Iron deficiency
- Weak, peeling, or cracked fingernails
- Chronic fatigue
- Adrenal Fatigue
- Dry skin
- Various autoimmune diseases
So, if the symptoms of low stomach acid and high stomach acid are nearly the same… how do you tell them apart? Well doctors have a tendency to throw pills at the problem, and those perscriptions are more often than not for high stomach acid. Now, what if some if not most of those patients actually had low stomach acid? Well their problems would likely get worse, leading to a cascade of treatments that never fix the real problem.
Testing Stomach Acid
So the ultimate question, how do you know if you have low stomach acid. Well their are a variety of ways but the one I used was to take HCl and Betaine pills. I took one to begin with when I ate a protein containing meal and then when I didn’t feel any warmth in my belly I upped it to two the following meal, until I reached 8 pills to achieve that warm sensation in the belly. Now you don’t actually want that warm sensation so you back it off one pill and that is your dosage.
Overtime you will likely need to lower the dosage as your stomach begins to produce higher levels of HCl. For instance I actually don’t take HCl anymore, I switched to Malic Acid which is a lower acidity level and include juicing celery and beets in the morning to promote an acidic environment in the stomach.
Hop on over to google and look up low stomach acid. You might be surprised what you find!
